FBI: The only source to nationwide criminal database

Many websites try to advertise nowadays that they have access to a nationwide database. It is possible that they might be having a vast data in their systems but the only one nationwide criminal database, the FBI. In other words, FBI is also known as the National Crime Information Center. Although, the records at FBI are not easily accessible to the general public, only a few prominent figures of criminal justice can access these records. Access to these criminal records is strictly forbidden however if one is found guilty in violating the laws, he can be summoned to heavy penalties. This adheres to the party selling the records and also the party buying them. There also exists a black market scenario, where many people host this exclusive information. These people usually have close ties to other members of the NCIC who like to profit from their relationship.

It is important to note that only 29 states grant you the ability to search statewide criminal records. Basically, these criminal records are accessed by general public through state index, but can also be acquired through the county. The state receives a portion of its index from the county. It is important for the state to receive a portion of its index from the county so that the state index may be complete. The best way to check when looking for access to criminal records is to check both state index and county index.

Different ways of getting information

One of the most effective ways in obtaining court records and criminal records is through the court. Usually in the past, one could access records from the court if the inquiring party was a member of the law or a court official. This would also mean interjection in the judicial process in order to search criminal records. Nowadays, many online vendors are available that provide on the spot searches that are derived from the court which also includes driving and criminal records. The results however are not quick and take up to 2 to 10 business days to return.

One can also ask the courts to perform a free criminal record check over the telephone. This process might provide valuable information but one cannot totally rely on the process and the results. The court clerks cannot be trusted 100% over the telephone. This process may take weeks or even months to make it back to the requester.
